MALTA ISLAND - PEOPLE AND CULTURE

Malta has about 400,000 inhabitants, citizens of Malta and a significant number of residents (especially elderly British, retired here due to exceptional climate and extremely affordable costs) over a small area, resulting in population density high of 1249 persons per square kilometer. Thus, Malta is the country with the highest density in Europe and third world country as density is concerned. 94% of the population lives in urban areas.

Sicilian influences can be seen especially during the night in Datorita Valletta, Malta's population belongs to the group somehow and Romance. 1.8% of residents in Malta are of different nationalities. The majority of the population are Maltese. The official languages are Maltese and English. Italian is also spoken, though to a less extent. Maltese is a Semitic language with strong influences, especially Arabic.

The city of Gozo has about 30,000 inhabitants. Comino also has permanent residents. In Comino live permanently: a couple of hoteliers, husband and wife, and a policeman ( replaced periodically).

Voters show small Mediterranean islands as a political division which is no longer found elsewhere. Conservative nationalists and socialists struggle for power, both could build a stable constituency. Therefore the difference in votes in Malta was very small. President Edward Fenech Adami had hoped such a referendum pointed out 57% voted for EU, and called the majority.

Party membership is inherited from generation to generation in Malta.

On March 12, 2003, four days after the referendum on EU enlargement, parliamentary elections were held in Malta. At the referendum people chose the Maltese national conservatives (PN) for 51.79% of the seats in parliament and Labour Party (MLP) for 47.52% of the seats in Parliament (MLP). The third party, Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) received 0.68% of the votes cast and therefore had no place in Parliament.
