WELCOME
TO MALTA ISLAND!
Malta
is an archipelago consisting of six islands: Malta, which is the biggest and most
important (246kmp), Gozo (67kmp) Comino (3.5 km) Cominotto, Filfla and St. Paul,
the last three are uninhabited.
Situated
at about 90 km south of Sicily island and 290 km from the coast of Africa, Malta
is in fact a low limestone plateau, with a maximum elevation of 417m (Gozo). Located
in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese archipelago combines natural
beauty with 7000 years of incredible history.
Since
ancient times the incredible beauty of the island, the honey-colored stones and
the harbors have been responsible for the influence and the reputation known around
the world. Situated at the gate of Eastern Africa, 90km south of Sicily, Malta
is enjoying the calm sea and the warm sun.
While
visiting Malta, tourists simply can't help admiring its crystal-clear water, rocky
coves, small red sand beaches, natural pools, sea caves. The 'Blue Window' , a
breath of fresh air offers a wonderful climate. The protective eye of Osiris,
known locally as the 'luzzu', watches over each multicolored fishing boat. The
sea is the purest and clearest around the Mediterranean. The island's greatest
treasure is its stone - a particular type of limestone: "This golden stone",
which has earned it the name of Melita Malta. "The island of honey "
inspired 7000 years of architecture.
Malta dates from around 4000 BC when the megalithic temples were built. These
temples, dedicated to the Goddess Mother, keep the purity of the most beautiful
and mysterious magical places of the island. The temples of Hagar Qim, which relate
to the sea and the island of Filfla, are among the best preserved temples of the
30 found in the whole Maltese archipelago.
In
1530, when the Knights settled in Malta, no one could have realised that destiny
would link the island both religiously and militarily.
For the knights, Malta was the gateway to Western Christianity and, for over 200
years, while the influence was growing in Europe, they endowed the island with
any great monuments so the sovereign would have been proud.
Towns,
fortresses, churches and palaces have turned Malta into the unique ''gem'' that
has become today. From the rocky peninsula on to the Grand Harbour, Valletta will
glow in front of your eyes. This city of the Knights does not allow everyone to
grasp at a glance. You have to caress the eyes, to walk straight along the streets
and stop to admire a facade, a balcony, a courtyard surrounded by arched passages,
a magnificent fountain or shields.
You
can then go directly to the Barracca Gardens which are situated across from the
splendid Auberge de Castille. The gardens and the Grand Harbour views are breathtaking.
The Church Knights, John Co-Cathedral of St. John, are just a number of invaluable
treasures hidden behind the somber facade. You'll be impressed by the abundance
of black, gold and elaborate designs that adorn the eight chapels dedicated to
different languages.
